Pence leads effort to add budget cuts to supplemental
Rep. Mike Pence and 28 other House conservatives voted against the rule for debate on the emergency supplemental spending bill for Iraq and Katrina yesterday. Below are several articles about the vote and Rep. Pence:
Carl Hulse of The New York Times writes "twenty-nine Republicans opposed the party procedural proposal to bring the bill to the floor - an almost unheard of revolt." To read the full article, click here. Please note a free subscription is required.
Jonathan Allen of The Hill states that the "RSC wanted to have separate votes on defense accounts and money for the hurricane-battered Gulf Coast." Click here for the article.
Liz Sidoti of The Associated Press writes that "conservatives were expected to try - and fail - to get the GOP leadership to split the measure in two so that the lawmakers can soften the impact on the deficit by cutting money from other programs to offset the hurricane-recovery money." Click here for the article.
Amy Fagan of The Washington Times states "the RSC also wanted to split the hurricane money and war funding into two separate bills. The leaders managed to secure 22 Democratic votes in support of the bill, so they avoided embarrassment and pushed the massive spending bill to the floor, 218-200. The House will vote on the bill itself today." Click here for the article.
