9-11 Letter sent to House Leadership
Below is a letter sent to Speaker Hastert and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi today by a bipartisan group of House members. Congressman Pence was one of four original signers of the letter, which focuses on recommendations for Congress in response to the 9-11 Commission report. Click here to view pictures from a press conference held today to address this issue.
Dear Mr. Speaker and Ms. Minority Leader:
As you know, after nearly 20 months of work, the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States (9-11 Commission) issued its findings and recommendations to the public today. We are writing to express our support for the work of the commission and to urge the Congress to move forward on the Commission’s recommendations on a bipartisan basis as soon as possible.
In its report, the commission issued 37 recommendations to help prevent future terrorist attacks, including details of a global strategy and government reorganization necessary to implement that strategy.
The Commission cited the need to attack terrorists and their organizations; prevent the continued growth of Islamic terrorism; and protect and prepare for terrorist attacks. To implement that strategy, it cited the need to unify U.S government efforts by linking intelligence and operational planning in a new National Counterterrorism Center; uniting the intelligence community under a National Intelligence Director; encouraging information sharing among decentralized government networks; strengthening congressional oversight and intelligence and homeland security; and strengthening existing national security workforce.
After 20 months of work by the commission, and nearly three years after the September 11 attacks, there is not a moment to lose in moving forward with the commission’s recommendations. We appreciate the Speaker’s stated commitment in this regard. While the recommendations must be debated fully, and may be adjusted, we urge that hearings begin the first week of September, as soon as Congress reconvenes.
It seems to us that beginning hearings on the Commission’s findings before another anniversary of the attacks passes would be an important signal to the families of the victims, as well as to all the American people, that Congress will work together on behalf of our great nation to help make this country safer.
Thank you for your consideration of this request.
Sincerely,

Thirty-five years since Apollo 11: Last night with Neil Armstrong
Yesterday was the 35th anniversary of the landing of Apollo 11 on the Moon and I, along with my wife Karen and our 12-year old son Michael, were overwhelmed to be a part of a small celebration at the Air and Space Museum that featured appearances by scores of astronauts, including the entire crew of Apollo 11. We arrived to a bustling reception in the museum after votes had ended around 6:30. My son was feeling under the weather but didn't want to miss the chance to see or maybe meet these legendary American heroes. You see, the Pence family are all "space nuts." I have attended two seperate launches before the Shuttle was grounded and have developed a personal relationship with many of the brave men and women at NASA through my work on the Science Committee. This was to be a special night, even from the cheap seats.
When we arrived we were escorted to a very small waiting room off of the main floor of the theatre at the museum. Ten people were in the room and there they were - Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. I grabbed my son's hand (the one he won't be washing for a week) and made a "b-line" to both men. After introducing my son to the first and second men ever to walk on the moon, I chatted with both men about how long it seemed from that fateful day that they stepped into the history of mankind and I sat in my living room (age 10) straining to see a glimpse of that moment on our black and white television. Neil Armstrong said, "ya know, it really doesn't seem like 35 years have passed." The two astronauts greeted one another as long lost friends as the Pences stood inches away. It was an awesome moment and one I know we will never forget.
Later I traded Indiana stories with Apollo 13 hero Captain Jim Lovell (he grew up in Indiana and was a Boy Scout in Terre Haute) and watched as the last man on the Moon, Gene Cernan, regailed my son about chance for him to be an astronaut. There are days this job takes a toll on our family, yesterday was not such a day. I left with a great sense that we must and we shall return to the Moon, as President Bush has challenged us, and soon make new heroes for grown men and little boys of the future as we go from the Moon to Mars to the stars. As we drove home sharing reflections on our brush with these colossal heroes of the American space age, my son summed it all up saying, "awesome Dad, totally awesome." Couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks Indiana.-Mike Pence

Pence honors Normandy veterans
At a weekend town hall meeting in Muncie, Congressman Pence recognized heroes from the Normandy D-Day invasion as well as modern day hereos from Indiana's Sixth District who helped rescue a trapped man from a burning van alongside an Indiana highway.

Back home again with horses and heroes
After a grueling week in Washington, what a delight to touch down in the Heartland and shuffle off the mantle of "Congressman Pence" and go where I am just "Mike" again. With my daughter Charlotte at my side, we made our way home to county fairs, town halls, church breakfasts and a truly inspiring ceremony where I had the honor of recognizing heroes past and present in Muncie, Indiana.
Our weekend started with the 4-H Horse and Pony Show in New Castle, Indiana. What a sight to see the beautiful animals, well cared for by earnest, freshfaced kids and the weather was perfect....70 degrees in July in Indiana!
From there we had a relaxed discussion at my New Castle town hall. About 30 people gathered for a sit-down chat about the issues. The federal marraige amendment was on the mind of most people. Some were all for it, others supported the idea but didn't understand the need for an amendment to the Constitution.
Saturday morning started as early as Friday ended late. I shared about my faith and family to around 150 friends at a church breakfast in New Whiteland, Indiana, and then made my way to Muncie to present awards to three men who rescued a quadriplegic from a burning van and to around 30 veterans of the D-Day invasion.
There are times when I feel very small in this job and am reminded of the everyday courage that makes Indiana such a great place to live and work. Standing alongside older men who were once freshfaced boys as they charged the beaches of France in 1944, to present such men what will likely be the last medal they recieve on this earth was an unspeakable privilege. mrp

Senate votes against FMA
After two days of passionate floor debate on the Federal Marriage Amendment, the Senate defeated a motion aimed at bringing the amendment to protect traditional marriage to a vote on the Senate floor, effectively killing the measure in that Chamber for now.
While I was disappointed with the Senate’s unwillingness to take action to protect civilization’s oldest and most important social institution, I take heart in the knowledge that this was only the first fight in what will prove to be a long battle over marriage.
If nothing else, this vote put our nation’s 100 Senators on record for Americans to see where their elected officials stand on the issue of gay marriage. You can click here to get the Senate’s roll call vote.

Senate to vote on marriage amendment today
As another hot and steamy day gets started in the nation's Capital, the debate inside the U.S. Senate chamber will continue to be just as heated as the weather. The debate on the Federal Marriage Amendment rages on with a vote scheduled for today.
Yesterday morning on the floor of the House, I stated that as a true conservative, I believe in conserving, protecting, and defending the foundational institutions of our society and of western civilization. Marriage was ordained by God, established by law and it’s the glue of the American family and the safest harbor to raise children.
While I wish we didn't need a Constitutional Amendment to tell us something we already know, I believe amending the Constitution is the only effective response to judicial activism at the state and federal level. My hope is the U.S. Senate will realize this as well. -MRP

Pence announces Muncie eligible to receive federal funding for law enforcement technology program
WASHINGTON, DC - U.S. Congressman Mike Pence announced today the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that would make Muncie, IN eligible to receive funding for the Law Enforcement Technology Program.
“Our local law enforcement agencies play a vital role in not only keeping our communities safe from crime but also in the global war on terrorism,” said Pence. “Should this bill become law, it could provide a great opportunity for the city of Muncie to bolster its local law enforcement infrastructure.”
The bill, which funds the Commerce, State and Justice Departments for FY 2005, now goes to the Senate. If it becomes law, Muncie would be eligible to receive funding to assist state and local law enforcement agencies in investigating, responding to and preventing crimes and gathering and analyzing information.
